Shenandoah National Park is a sprawling 200,000-acre reserve along the Blue Ridge Mountains, established in 1935. Featuring over 500 kilometres of trails, the park is renowned for its scenic Skyline Drive, offering vistas of the Appalachian region and the changing foliage throughout the seasons, particularly stunning in autumn.
For a full experience, allow a day or more to hike the numerous trails, including parts of the Appalachian Trail. Visit nearby Charlottesville for a taste of local history and culture, but be prepared for variable weather, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Keep an eye out for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk.
