Two hours total — round-trip ferry from Liberty Square or Patriots Point with entrance to Fort Sumter, featuring a self-guided exploration of the historic site.
This tour combines a round-trip ferry ride with admission to Fort Sumter National Monument. Depart from either Liberty Square or Patriots Point, where you'll enjoy views of Charleston landmarks like the USS Yorktown and Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge during your one-hour ferry ride.
At Fort Sumter, explore the grounds and learn about the beginning of the American Civil War, where the first shots were fired. A National Park Ranger will greet you upon arrival. Your visit allows time to wander through the well-preserved fort ruins and shop at the Museum Store before taking in scenic city views on the return ferry ride.
Reviews
The experience was well-organized and very informative. The ferry ride offered stunning views of Charleston Harbor, complemented by insights from a knowledgeable tour guide. At the fort, a National Park ranger provided a thorough overview of its history.
We truly enjoyed our experience. The ranger's narration was both entertaining and insightful. My son even had the opportunity to assist with the flag raising. We will surely recommend this tour to others.
The park volunteer aboard the ferry and at the fort was extremely knowledgeable. It’s definitely a place worth visiting, as there's a wealth of history to discover.
I had a fantastic time on this tour; the presentation was excellent. It was definitely time well spent, and I would suggest this experience to anyone traveling to Charleston, SC.
The duration of the tour was ideal. The self-guided information provided by Sumpter was adequate for our time at the fort. We also enjoyed beautiful views of the bay and the city from the boat.
The fort is small but quite fascinating. The boat ride was enjoyable despite being windy. The fort staff were friendly and exceptionally well-informed.
I was disappointed with the experience. Upon arriving at the national park service, I assumed that’s where I would catch the ferry to Fort Sumter. However, there was no address included in my ticket package for the ferry. A ranger informed me that I likely needed to go to Patriots Point, but I didn’t have enough time to get there. As a result, I ended up paying for another ferry through the Park Service, which meant I paid twice to reach Fort Sumter—once for what I thought was the correct service and then again for the only option available. It would have been helpful if I had been informed about the different ferry services and given the correct address. This oversight cost me $172 that I didn’t plan on spending. Make sure to double-check these details, as I was caught off guard.
The ranger talk was superb, and the flag raising ceremony was quite lovely. This is done for the first tour of the day.
This was a fantastic experience. I'm really glad we decided to go. The ferry boat tour guide was an incredible storyteller, making me wish my history teachers had been like him. I highly recommend it.
The experience was fantastic, combining a visit to the Fort with a pleasant boat ride in the harbor. The staff was highly knowledgeable and engaging.
