Reviews
Our tour began early in the morning from Campeche and we returned in the early evening, making it quite a long day. Despite that, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Our tour with Bianca and our driver Samuel was fantastic. The panoramic view of the jungle from the top of the ruins—30 miles of greenery all around—will be a lasting memory. As a family of five, we were excited that our youngest, just 7 years old, made it to the top. Bianca was knowledgeable, full of energy, and her English was excellent. Just as we were about to leave, we spotted three howler monkeys in the canopy. I highly recommend this tour. John Hayes, London.
Our visit to Calakmul was a long-awaited goal, and we achieved it with a fantastic company. The tour exceeded our expectations. Carlos and Samuel were excellent drivers, and Toño was an outstanding guide—make sure to request him if you book. The staff was very attentive, and the surprise picnic was a delightful addition. This tour is definitely worth it.
We encountered a minor issue when they forgot to pick us up from our campsite in the jungle, located 5 km farther in Kaan. Fortunately, after we walked toward the Kaan house and managed to call them, they quickly addressed the situation. The guide was excellent, and the lunch offered was enjoyable. I highly recommend this experience.
The guide was attentive and well-informed, making the experience remarkable despite the terrible traffic on the Mayan train, which took an entire day. However, once we arrived in Calakmul, all of that was forgotten due to the stunning views.
This tour to Calakmul from Casa Ka'an (Xpujil) was remarkable. The views from the pyramids are extraordinary. Climbing three pyramids involves ascending around 50 flights of stairs. I strongly recommend this experience, as it's uncertain how long the opportunity to climb these pyramids will last, making it a must during any Yucatan visit. Ka'an Expeditions operates professionally, and I would recommend them to anyone. We also participated in the jungle tour and stayed at Casa Ka'an.
Exploring this Mayan site in a small group was a delightful experience. We learned about both the ruins and the local flora and fauna. The personal attention was appreciated, and we climbed four pyramids at a comfortable pace. The journey from the entrance to the site is quite lengthy, so we were thankful not to have to drive ourselves.
The guide and drivers were excellent: friendly and very professional. Calakmul features many impressive structures, and the view from the highest point was remarkable, like being in an airplane. We only spotted a few animals, including 2-3 tapirs feeding in a small pond, which we enjoyed watching for a while. The journey does involve several hours of driving, sometimes through traffic or roadwork, but the scenery during the drive is pleasant. I struggled to find other options to reach this destination, so I appreciated the service. The only stressful moment occurred when I received an email the night before regarding uncertainty about my pickup location. I had already provided my hotel details and received confirmation they would collect me from there, so I was concerned. Thankfully, someone arrived on time, and the day proceeded as intended. Although communication could improve, everything turned out fine in the end.
We embarked on a tour to Calakmul from Campeche, visiting the Rio Bec sites, including Chicanna, Becan, and Xpujil. This was followed by a stop at the 20th of November Community for craft workshops focusing on seeds, honey, and wood. Afterward, we traveled back to Campeche via Balamku. Our guides—Roberto in Calakmul, Ángel in Río Bec, and Manuel in Balamku—were friendly and well-informed about the local wildlife. We stayed for two nights at the Casa Maran hotel in Xpujil, which was clean but quite basic, lacking natural light and ventilation, though the rooms were spacious. The transportation from Campeche to Xpujil was good, but we did have an issue where the driver on the return trip brought an unconsiderate companion who arrived about 40 minutes late and took up space without asking others if they needed room.
The day was lengthy but absolutely worthwhile. Alfonso, our guide and driver, provided a wealth of knowledge, sparking fascinating conversations about the sites and Mexica culture, which made the 4-hour drive seem shorter. He was also an outstanding driver, particularly during the heavy rain on our way back. Our English-speaking guide offered extensive information as well.
