Our group of nine recently took a four-day tour of Jasper and Banff with Westar, and while our guides Lisa, Jamie, and Ray were outstanding, I was left very disappointed on the final day. The "Sky Walk tour" that we had booked for the Colombian Icefield was unexpectedly cancelled without any explanation or apology. Upon returning to Toronto, we sought a refund for the Sky Walk tour, for which we had paid $223 (before tax) for four activities per person. However, the office informed us that the refund would only be $8.40, including tax, for each individual. We find this refund unacceptable. I cannot recommend this experience.
We traveled from Vancouver, often referred to as "Raincouver," to Calgary, where our guide Lisa mentioned it would "stay at home" during winter. Banff offers an incredible visual experience, with majestic mountains and lush vegetation complementing its emerald lakes. The true essence of its beauty lies in the snowy peaks that adorn the landscape. Lisa informed us that autumn is the optimal time to visit; going early means encountering rugged mountain views before fresh snow, and visiting late may lead to heavy snowfall that obscures the scenery. The Fairmont Hotel provides stunning views of Lake Louise, where guests can enjoy the landscape from their rooms. While walking along the lakeside, we could observe the changing sunlight, and we found fewer crowds in the most picturesque spots, allowing the mountains to cast shadows that highlighted the scenery. Even at midday, a sense of morning mist lingered in the air. In China, landscapes often resemble a dragon and a tiger, showcasing the wonders of nature. Lisa shared captivating stories about each location and the legends surrounding them, which imbued the scenery with a sense of nostalgia. We witnessed Lake Louise, admired Moraine Lake, and discovered Emerald Lake, all enriched by history. It felt like encountering the poetry of Li Baiyue daily. After reflecting on our daytime adventure, we visited the local steakhouse recommended by Lisa for a delightful medium-rare dinner.
Jie Luo was the best tour guide we have encountered during our travels, and we are certainly planning to return to Banff. We also hope to book the Fairmont hotel on our next visit.
The trip was fantastic with beautiful scenery and a well-planned itinerary. However, there were issues with the guide Kelvin Chau. During our first two days in Jasper, it felt like I was bothering him with my questions. He often asked me to wait and seemed distracted, which delayed his answers. Although the tour was in both English and Chinese, Kelvin showed much more enthusiasm and thoroughness in his Chinese explanations, while the English ones felt rushed and filled with jokes rather than valuable information. After spending time with other guides, Amber and Joseph, who were friendly and very knowledgeable, it became clear that Kelvin's approach was not typical. Unfortunately, his rudeness and sarcasm were particularly disappointing on my birthday. I believe he should consider a different line of work better suited to his temperament.
My teenager and I enjoyed a fantastic tour of Banff, Jasper, and Yoho National Parks with Westar. Their well-planned itinerary ensured we visited all the highlights over four days. I opted for the lunch package along with several optional activities, like the Banff Gondola and Maligne Lake Cruise, which are must-dos. Visiting Alberta during peak summer season, having these pre-booked lunches and activities made our trip smooth and stress-free, eliminating the need to wait in long lines for tickets or meals. Lunch at the Fairmont Brasserie offered an opportunity to explore the iconic “Castle in the Rockies,” and the buffet at Maligne Lake Chalet was delightful. Our guide, Amber, was exceptional—knowledgeable and attentive throughout the trip, and her positive energy was refreshing. We appreciated her efforts to communicate in both clear English and Chinese for our mostly Chinese-speaking group. One note for improvement would be Westar's reserved seating process to avoid conflicts among passengers. Nonetheless, we loved our seats and had a great experience overall. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour.
During the first day, Amber, our tour guide, provided a thorough and professional bilingual explanation. She also went out of her way to help with luggage delivery inquiries to the hotel. On the second day, Joseph Xiaomao offered an engaging bilingual introduction that added depth to our experience. This trip allowed us not only to appreciate the stunning landscapes but also to gain a better understanding of the area's history and unique features.
I wish I could give a rating of zero. This is the third day of our trip, and they altered our itinerary without notifying us until we were already picked up by the driver. This completely disrupted our plans and ruined our vacation. When I raised my concerns with the driver, he simply said there was nothing he could do.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Banff, a destination that everyone should experience at least once. A special thanks to Kan, our tour guide, for his excellent care over the last two days.
