As a Dominican native with my American husband, this tour offered a wonderful opportunity to dive into the true Dominican culture away from our resort stay. Our guide, Jesús, was outstanding—friendly, helpful, and well-informed. He provided an excellent introduction to Puerto Plata, which I was unfamiliar with. From the fresh fruit farm Los Mangos to savoring delicious local dishes, every moment was unforgettable. Dominican cuisine is exceptional, and this experience reaffirmed that real appreciation occurs beyond the resort’s confines. Highly recommended! Thank you, Jesús, for the fantastic tour!
Arrive hungry and skip breakfast, as the tour in Puerto Plata promises a feast. After a walk through the bustling port, we met our guide, Jesus Castro, who took on multiple roles throughout the day. Our adventure began in the countryside with a surprise donkey ride and shopping at Los Mangos, where we sampled the local drink, Mamajuana. Next, we stopped at El Mangueo, a popular roadside eatery, where I regretted my light breakfast choice. The meal was hearty, offering Mangu, sausages, plantains, fried eggs, avocado, and fried cheese, all of which were mouthwatering. Following lunch, we visited the Amber Mine Museum, guided by Junior, where we learned about the island's amber mining history and saw fascinating encased objects. At the end, we found a hand-rolled cigar shop, and I bought some non-flavored cigars while my wife hesitated on the mango-infused ones. We also got a bag of the local coffee, Colao de la Aldea, and my wife picked out an amber bracelet. Our final stops included a chocolate shop where we bought organic hot chocolate tablets known as Chocolala Poca Espuma y Mucho Chocolate, which had a unique blend of ingredients. Jesus drove us around the city and took us to a viewpoint overlooking the port for a fantastic photo op of our cruise ship. He captured plenty of photos during the day and even suggested a cigar factory visit, although we decided to head back to the ship instead. Overall, it was around a three-hour tour, and we truly enjoyed it, thanks to Jesus Castro. A final note: it seemed like the local police were not thrilled with Jesus's "policeman" role stopping traffic for us to cross.
Jose is wonderful and full of enthusiasm for showcasing Puerto Plata. The lunch was delicious, and he provided a wealth of information on local fruits and cocoa beans.
This was the best tour experience I've ever had. Juan, our guide, was fantastic. We explored both the countryside and city, visited forts, savored a traditional Dominican meal at a local spot, and enjoyed fresh fruits. There were many chances for photos, including with wildlife, and opportunities to shop for souvenirs. I had a wonderful discussion with Juan about MLB and its Dominican stars. I would definitely recommend him as a tour guide.
It took me a while to write this, but this was by far the best food tour we've ever experienced, and we love food tours—having been on several, including four during this trip alone. Let me get to why this tour was amazing. If you don’t have time to read everything, just know: book it now! You won't regret it. We arrived at the cruise port and walked to where our guide, Mercado, was waiting. I recommend saving the meeting information in case your internet is as poor as ours was, which made us a little late. Mercado welcomed us with a big smile and positive energy, ready to take us to his favorite spots. I won’t spoil all the surprises, but we visited at least seven locations, starting with a fresh pot of coffee at his friend’s grandmother’s house! If you want to avoid the usual tourist traps, this is definitely the tour for you. After about six hours, we were completely satisfied. The places we visited were off the beaten path, and the food was both authentic and delicious. We learned about the local history and when residents typically enjoy the dishes we were tasting. I wish I could fully express the experience, but it's something you need to do yourself. The cheese blocks by the road, the El Presidentes while traveling, the secret Empanada shop, and the chicharrones were highlights! Thank you, Mercado, for an incredible experience that my partner and I still rave about months later. If you love food but want to skip the crowds and rush of typical tours, choose this one. Just a tip: don’t forget bug repellent—we got eaten up by mosquitoes! But that shows how great the tour was, and even with the bites, we rate it an 11 out of 10 and highly recommend it.
We had an incredible food tour experience with locals in Puerto Plata. Our guide, Kelvin Ventura, was exceptional and treated us like family. He even took us to his own family farm to learn about different trees and herbs. Tasting chocolate water from the plant was a standout moment. Despite not feeling too well, Kelvin kindly tailored the tour for us, introducing us to Dominican ice cream and traditional food while showing us Pink Street and Umbrella Street. He has a talent for photography and went the extra mile to provide a remedy for my stomach issues. To top it off, he surprised me with a birthday gift. Before we departed, he delighted us with two homemade desserts from his wife, which were delicious. This tour offered a genuine cultural experience that we highly recommend, and we plan to return.
Jose, our guide, was fantastic. He provided a wealth of information, welcomed questions, and had a great sense of humor. We explored various parts of the island and captured some stunning photos. Additionally, the food was delicious and abundant. We would definitely choose this tour again.
Joseph, our host, was incredibly kind and knowledgeable, sharing many details about the destination. We enjoyed delicious food, including Chicharon, fresh fruit, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and an authentic Dominican Republic breakfast alongside ice cream. This experience is a must for families.
The tour was fantastic, and our guide, Jesus Castro, did an excellent job. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in trying it.
Henry Gonzalez was fantastic. The food was enjoyable, and I appreciate the great experience. There were plenty of opportunities to shop along the way. I would definitely recommend this.
