Branson, Missouri, is a vibrant mix of go-karts, flashy T-shirts, and uniquely designed theaters. However, if you venture beyond the surface with just sixteen dollars, there’s a place where history still echoes. On the Shepherd of the Hills Farm Tour guided by Cowboy John, a man who embodies the tales he tells because his family lived them, you’ll experience real history. Rather than delivering a rehearsed narrative, he offers heartfelt recollections filled with humor and a genuine passion that truly resonates. We visited Old Matt’s Cabin, a historical site where you can feel the past. The air is thick with memories from a time when life was tough and solitude was common. Then comes Inspiration Point, the second-highest location in Southwest Missouri, where the incredible views reflect what inspired Wright's impactful writing. Next, we saw Ike’s Post Office, a small yet significant structure that once served as the community’s connection to the outside world. It’s unpretentious and offers a sense of resilience. We were also granted a glimpse of the Old Mill Theatre, a large outdoor venue that has hosted performances for decades. For the cost of an average meal, you gain an authentic experience of the Ozarks' soul. The tour is truly immersive and genuine, making it a valuable investment.
Spending the afternoon on this tour was truly enjoyable. Despite the bad weather and being the only four participants, Cowboy John, an engaging historian with a treasure trove of knowledge, turned it into a lovely experience. We learned he is also a talented musician and singer who impressed us with an impressive yodel. Everyone is eager to return to explore all that Shepherd of the Hills has to offer, though I’ll pass on the zip lining and just watch the others.
The experience was quite informative, and the views were breathtaking as well.
We had an outstanding experience with Cowboy John. He is an amazing storyteller and performer, and the tour left us eager to return.
The tour was both highly informative and enjoyable. Cowboy John demonstrates extensive knowledge about the book and the region. Hoss provided a warm welcome and was very helpful upon our arrival. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has read the book or values local history.
The tour was fantastic. Our guide had a deep passion for the story of the Shepherd of the Hills, delivering a captivating and informative talk that inspired me to purchase the book. We also intend to return for the show.
The canopy experience was outstanding. Our guides were very cool and humorous, making us feel completely at ease. I highly recommend this zip line to everyone.
This tour was enjoyable and full of information. Our guide, Cowboy John, made the experience lively with his extensive knowledge, humor, and singing. We traveled in a covered, low-profile metal wagon to various historical sites, including the stage area and some behind-the-scenes spots. This is definitely a must-do for anyone visiting and is suitable for all ages.
Cowboy John did an outstanding job of narrating the story while distinguishing between fact and fiction. As someone who has been a tour guide myself, I hold high standards, and he certainly met them. It was a great tour.
I had an incredible experience on the tour with Cowboy John. He shared fascinating historical insights and hidden details that truly highlight the uniqueness of this place. Additionally, he's an amazing musician. This ranks among the best historical tours I've taken in my 70+ years of traveling globally. Thank you, Cowboy John!
