Two hours walking tour through historic Birmingham, featuring personal stories and key protests led by a local guide with deep roots in the community.
This two-hour walking tour takes you through Birmingham, Alabama, once known as the most segregated city in America. Led by Wilhelmina Thomas, a resident with personal ties to the Civil Rights Movement, you’ll hear firsthand accounts of life under Jim Crow and the community's struggle for equality.
The tour visits essential sites such as Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th Street Baptist Church, each significant in the fight for civil rights. You'll encounter poignant reflections on both pain and resilience at each location. A digital “Witness Packet” download is included for direct bookings, offering further context to the stories shared throughout the tour.

We were only in town for the day and booked a private tour for just the two of us. Our guide was excellent, and we gained a lot of knowledge during the experience. I highly suggest scheduling this if you're in the area.
I was very satisfied with how our guide conducted the tour of Birmingham. The knowledge about the city's history was impressive, making for an unforgettable experience.
An insightful and engaging tour that truly makes you reflect. I appreciate Wilemma for sharing her knowledge and personal experiences.
The experience was relaxed, friendly, and welcoming, with a personal touch. It was very informative, adaptable, and flexible. I couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide.
Wilhamena is incredibly knowledgeable and provided a fantastic tour. As a native of Birmingham, her insights truly enhance the overall experience.
I was the sole participant on the tour, which was a bit disappointing as it would have been nice to share the experience with others. However, the tour guide was well-informed, and we engaged in an interesting conversation throughout the 90 minutes.
During my visit to Birmingham with my son in the military, we sought to deepen our understanding of the city and discovered a civil rights experience. As a white person from the north, I had previously learned about this in school, but those lessons faded over time. Wilhelmina provided an exceptional overview of life in Birmingham during that challenging decade, sharing insights she gained from her own experiences rather than from artificial sources. We valued her candid evaluation of even the more contentious issues, and we found ourselves discussing it multiple times the following day, which I believe is the greatest praise I can give.
The walking tour of downtown Birmingham is quite personal, led by a lifelong local. It offers deep insights and a profound experience as you visit the actual sites of significant historical events.
The tour seemed appealing, but my experience since booking has been frustrating. After making the reservation a couple of days prior in September, I received an email hours before the tour stating it was canceled and offering options for rescheduling or a refund. While I understand that unforeseen circumstances occur, I was disappointed. I requested a refund since I was leaving town the following day and couldn’t reschedule. However, I never received a response, despite multiple emails and a phone call to Wolfgang, who promised to get back to me but never did. It's now been two months with no refund. Overall, this has been a negative experience with poor customer support. While the tour could be excellent, I cannot recommend it due to the lack of communication and reliability, resulting in wasted money.
The tour operator did not respond to my inquiries. The weather was very cold and rainy on the day of the tour, and I wanted to confirm if it was still happening. I received no reply. I hope for a refund.
