• Located on a hill with views of the plain, approximately 40 km from Bhopal, Sanchi is home to a collection of Buddhist monuments, including monolithic pillars, palaces, temples, and monasteries. Most of these structures date back to the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. It is regarded as the oldest Buddhist sanctuary still in existence and was an important Buddhist center in India until the 12th century A.D. • The Udayagiri Caves, situated 13 km from Sanchi, are from the 4th-5th Century A.D. These caves exhibit all the defining characteristics that contributed to the vitality, vigor, and expressive richness of Gupta art, including beautifully crafted capitals, unique entrance designs, and a consistent architrave that serves as a string-course around the structures, making them well worth visiting. • The Stupa, built during Emperor Ashoka's reign in the 3rd Century B.C., features impressive architecture surrounded by 'Toranas' symbolizing love, peace, trust, and courage. The main chamber contains large hemispherical domes that house various relics of Lord Buddha. It is recognized as one of the best-preserved ancient stupas in central India and is listed among the World Heritage sites.
