What's the itinerary?+
• You will be collected from your hotel, airport, or railway station in Bhopal for a full-day trip to Udayagiri Caves and Sanchi, which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The travel time will be 1 hour and 30 minutes each way, covering a distance of 35 miles (60 km). Visit Sanchi, situated 30 miles (45 km) to the northeast of Bhopal. It is a tranquil hill that features a collection of stupas, monasteries, temples, and pillars that date back from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD. Sanchi holds historical significance as an ancient pilgrimage site for Buddhists, notable for its representation of Buddha through symbols rather than figures. The lotus illustrates Buddha's birth, the tree indicates his enlightenment, and the wheel signifies his attainment of nirvana (salvation). Buddha's presence is symbolized by his footprints and throne. Sanchi was rediscovered by a British officer in 1818 and underwent substantial restoration in 1912. • Following the visit to Sanchi, you will be taken to the Udayagiri Caves, which are approximately 10 miles (15 km) from Sanchi. Udayagiri Caves serve as an early Hindu ritual location near the Vidisha region. They were extensively carved and altered under the direction of Chandragupta II, the Emperor of the Gupta Empire, during the late 4th and 5th centuries AD. This site is currently managed as a tourist attraction by the Archaeological Survey of India. Udayagiri consists of a large U-shaped plateau adjacent to the River Bes. The caves are a collection of rock-cut sanctuaries and reliefs carved into the hillside. Among the notable sculptures is the representation of Viṣṇu in his boar-headed incarnation as Varaha. The site includes significant inscriptions from the Gupta dynasty. Additionally, Udayagiri features various rock shelters, petroglyphs, remnants of structures, inscriptions, water systems, fortifications, and habitation mounds, many of which have yet to be fully excavated. You will be returned to your hotel, airport, or railway station in Bhopal at the conclusion of the day.
