• Pickup will occur from your hotel in the morning for transport to the Vindhyachal mountains, where the Mesolithic Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka are located. Approximately 750 Rock Shelters are spread across seven hills within a six-mile area. These caves are significant as they hold the earliest evidence of human life on the Indian subcontinent. Of the 750 shelters, around 500 feature well-preserved cave paintings that date back roughly 30,000 years. These artworks are reminiscent of those found in Australia, the Kalahari Desert, and Lascaux, France. Time will be allotted to explore this historic collection of art, including a notable painting of a bison attacking a man, which can only be seen when the sun is positioned in a specific way. • Following the cave visit, there will be a lunch break at a local restaurant (lunch at your own expense). After lunch, travel to Bhojpur, located 45 minutes away, to see its famous temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Constructed in the 11th century, this temple features one of the largest lingas in India, carved from a single rock. The construction of this temple was inexplicably halted and remains unfinished. Architectural plans can be seen engraved on nearby rocks alongside abandoned materials at the site. The carved plans and mason's marks provide insight into the construction techniques used during India’s 11th century. The temple is recognized as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). At the conclusion of the tour, transportation will be provided back to Bhopal for drop-off at your hotel.
