Half-day tour — explore the Makasutu cultural forest and canoe ride on Mandinga Bolong creek, with opportunities for palm juice tasting and fortune telling.
This half-day excursion into the Makasutu cultural forest appeals to both nature-lovers and those curious about local history and traditional medicine. The tour includes a guided exploration of various plants and trees within the forest, focusing on their cultural significance and uses.
A traditional African pirogue canoe ride along the Mandinga Bolong creek provides a serene vantage point to observe the surrounding beauty. Participants have the chance to sample fresh palm juice and engage in fortune telling with a local Marabout. The entrance fee to Makasutu is 1500 GMD, paid in cash and not included in the tour price. Bring along some local currency, as most places in Gambia do not accept credit cards.
Reviews
Canoeing through the mangroves offers a unique experience, and coupled with the forest walk led by an insightful guide, it greatly enhanced our knowledge of Gambia’s biodiversity. Although the palm reader and palm wine tapper were not present due to our early start, we didn’t feel it detracted from the experience. This region reflects the creativity and dedication of its founders; although some areas are showing signs of decline due to reduced tourism since the pandemic, it remains an initiative worth supporting. We opted for long trousers, but the well-maintained sandy paths would have been fine for shorts as well. Lunch options are available for those looking to extend their roughly two-hour visit.
We arranged this tour just across from our hotel. There's so much to experience, particularly the many monkeys, and we enjoyed a pleasant boat ride as well.
We enjoyed a wonderful excursion to Makasutu Cultural Village. Although it wasn't peak season, we still had the chance to canoe, observe baboons, and gain a lot of knowledge. The organization was excellent and everyone was friendly.
I called to confirm the tour a day prior, and the operator made various excuses to change us to a different tour since we were the only ones booked. They claimed the driver was sick and that the original tour was long and far. Ultimately, they canceled entirely. This company is very dishonest. Avoid them.
Makasutu Culture Forest offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the local flora and fauna, with insightful explanations provided by the friendly guides. The boat trip was particularly enjoyable. I want to extend my gratitude to Jarry from Kassama Tours, who was warm and a pleasure to converse with.
The Makasutu tour was truly enjoyable, offering a lush and tranquil nature walk. We also went on the Lamin Lodge tour, which was fascinating with the oyster farm visit, pirogue boat ride, and exploring the mangroves. Jarry and her driver were friendly and accommodating, making our time with them delightful. I hope the air conditioning in the car is fixed for our next visit. Thank you!
The team was very accommodating and friendly. They kindly picked us up from our hotel when we requested it. We enjoyed a pleasant conversation during the car ride.
My visit to Makasutu Forest with Kassama Tours was both stunning and informative. They provided insights into the mangroves and forest's flora and fauna. The experience was laid-back and enjoyable, so I strongly recommend this journey and Kassama Tours.
Makasutu Forest was beyond our expectations, offering a stunning experience in The Gambia. The passionate staff shared their extensive knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Our visit included a delightful boat ride through mangroves, sampling local palm juice, and climbing to a viewpoint for breathtaking views of the forest and river. We captured numerous photos of baboons, birds, and the landscape. This gem deserves more recognition. Our friendly driver also provided excellent service, picking us up and coordinating ahead of the trip. Highly recommended.
Visiting Makasutu Forest was an amazing experience. We found it to be among the most overlooked attractions in The Gambia. The scenic boat ride and the stunning viewpoints left a lasting impression. We enjoyed time with the Guinea baboons and spotted numerous birds. The guides were enthusiastic and well-informed. The hassle-free hotel pickup and drop-off added to the overall enjoyment. Don't miss out on Makasutu when in The Gambia.
