During our trip to The Gambia, we had an exceptional experience with Armstrong and his wonderful team from Black and White Safari. As a private shore excursion with 14 guests from the Holland America Zuiderdam, we began our cultural journey at the outdoor market in Banjul, where the team gathered ingredients and spices for our lavish meal. We then had the pleasure of cooking at Armstrong’s family home, where we actively participated in preparing the food. It was delicious and truly offered a deep cultural immersion.
We began our day at 7 AM with Muhammad from Black and White. Our journey started at the Banjul ferry, which was not available, so we took a dugout canoe—a remarkable experience. We crossed the Gambia River and hopped into an open-top 4x4 to easily enter Senegal. At the safari park, I was given a large stick and had the thrilling opportunity to walk with lions, which was incredible. After exploring the park, we returned on the actual ferry. Thank you, Muhammad, for an unforgettable day and lasting memories.
I had an incredible time with Sophie in her lovely home, where we shopped, cooked, and enjoyed authentic Gambian cuisine. Armstrong and his team were incredibly accommodating and took care of every detail. We experienced three excursions, and each one was wonderful.
This experience was wonderful—from visiting the market to buy ingredients, to donning traditional attire, and cooking in a Gambian family's garden. The meal was exquisite, and understanding the work behind it made me appreciate it even more. I was surprised that it took most of the day; I left at 9:30 a.m. and returned by 4 p.m. I am grateful to the family for welcoming me into their home. I highly recommend this if you're seeking something unique.
My girlfriend and I participated in the cooking tour, and it was incredible. We visited a traditional Gambian compound, bought fresh ingredients and fish at the market, and then returned to prepare two full meals intended to serve 30 people. Cooking outdoors, interacting with the local children, and contributing to the meals was a wonderful experience.
I enjoyed a calming boat excursion with Janeya Tours. The boat featured a cozy 1 m2 kitchen where the cooks prepared a delightful lunch buffet while we sailed through the mangroves. We spotted birds, observed women gathering oysters, and had some time for fishing. There were abundant drink options available, including coffee, tea, soft drinks, and beer, along with snacks. You could choose to relax in the sun or stay in the shade. I highly recommend this for a peaceful day.
This excursion was the highlight of my cruise through West Africa. Black and White Safari offered an incredible insight into local life in The Gambia. Warmly greeted by MuHammed and Bax at the cruise port, we headed to a local home where we met Kalla, a truly kind and generous person. She dressed me in beautiful traditional clothing and then guided us through a local market to gather ingredients for our meal. Experiencing the markets was unforgettable, unlike anything I've seen before. Upon returning to Kalla’s house, I jumped right into cooking with her, which I highly recommend for a fun, educational, and rewarding experience. I helped prepare meat, chop vegetables, and wash rice, learning directly from Kalla's home routine. The food turned out to be incredibly delicious; I was thrilled by the delightful flavors from the ingredients I had prepped myself. I highly recommend trying Domoda, the peanut sauce stew with chicken and rice. After our meal, I helped with the cleanup, which gave me further insight into local life. Kalla even sent me home with Gambian peanut butter and snacks to recreate the meal later. The people here have an infectious spirit, and I now understand why The Gambia is called “The Smiling Coast of Africa.” Despite being the smallest country on the continent, the love and joy I experienced were immense and transformative. If you want a warm welcome and an authentic experience, I strongly suggest trying this activity. I am deeply grateful for this unforgettable journey.
I have visited Gambia twice with my friends, and we are all planning another trip this year. Black and White is consistently the best choice for us. We've enjoyed numerous experiences with them, including the Senegal lion walk, Safari, Kunta Kinte Tour, Reptile Park, museums, and Paradise Beach, among others. Each time has been fantastic. Armstrong, Yaya, and Lamin, our guides, are remarkable. We are looking forward to returning and exploring more of Gambia with Black and White tours.
Sofie offered a truly authentic experience. We traveled to her residence in a small town about 15km from Banjul, making a stop at a large market to purchase fresh fish and vegetables for our meal. Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome and traditional Gambian attire to wear for the day. We gathered outside under the mango tree while her sister Fatima started the fire, and together we prepared an incredibly delicious meal. I strongly recommend this tour to visitors; you will be just as pleased as we were.
Our experience at the Home Cooking Experience was incredible. Seven of us participated, dressed in Gambian attire, creating beautiful memories through photos. We visited the market to select our ingredients, and everyone contributed. The traditional African meal was absolutely delicious, and we also prepared sorrel (Wonja) and Baobab. We would gladly do it all over again. A big thank you to Black and White Safari Tours. We look forward to returning for the fourth year in December.
