We had a pleasant day exploring some key sights in The Gambia. The Tanjin fishing village was a fascinating highlight, showcasing the hustle and bustle of fish being unloaded from Senegalese boats for market. Wandering through various sections of the Banjul market was enjoyable, and we appreciated seeing the incredibly relaxed crocodiles at the Katchikally crocodile pool. The museum featured intriguing archaeological artifacts from the cave and stone ages. Our driver skillfully maneuvered through the chaotic traffic. It seems tourism is still developing in this region, and our guide Jarry was new to the role, still gaining experience. Be aware that you'll likely encounter unroadworthy vehicles, lack of air conditioning, and limited ATM access for Gambian dollars, as USD is more commonly accepted. The brief visit to Lamin Lodge wasn't worthwhile unless you plan to stay longer for a mangrove boat ride; we were there for only 10 minutes, and the guide requested a tip. Our time at Serrekunda markets was cut short due to traffic and police stops, but we didn’t mind. It helped to have additional assistants with the guide, preventing harassment from locals and persistent vendors.
Our trip to Banyul with Jarry, Jimmy's sister, was incredible. Her local knowledge truly enhanced the experience. Everything was well organized, and communication via WhatsApp was seamless. We had such a great time that we quickly decided to book the Makasutu trip as well.
Meeting up outside the port gates was straightforward. The guide was excellent. However, be cautious of traffic police; we were stopped four times for 'document' checks, so it's best not to wait too long to return to the port.
