Four hours of guided exploration in Varosha, the abandoned resort once frequented by celebrities, with a map for navigation and ample time to wander the streets and beaches.
This four-hour experience focuses on Varosha, a deserted resort area that drew the rich and famous in the 1970s, including legends like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Since conflict in 1974 left it abandoned, the hotels, shops, and homes tell a fascinating story of a lost era.
Guided participants receive a map to navigate the area and learn about significant buildings. Within the designated areas, you're free to roam and explore at your leisure, whether that means walking the quiet streets, enjoying a snack, or swimming at nearby beaches. This excursion provides a unique perspective on a piece of Cyprus's history, with ample time to absorb the atmosphere.

I had a wonderful experience traveling through charming villages. Varosha, once a stunning location, is unfortunately in decline now, but it's definitely worth visiting to understand its history. Be sure to bring a towel to sit on, as the bus seats can become quite hot and sticky, and don't forget a hat; make sure it’s secure so it doesn’t blow away.
Visiting Varosha was a captivating yet haunting experience, often tinged with sadness. The sight of the dilapidated buildings was poignant, but I'm glad we made the trip. It's easy to overlook that you're in Turkish Cyprus, as the phone network switches and the currency is the Turkish Lira. The bus was a bit warm, but overall, it was a wonderful experience.
The excursion was intriguing, especially due to the knowledgeable and friendly commentary from the bus staff. They made the experience enjoyable and efficiently managed passport formalities. Visiting Varosha was a poignant experience, revealing a captivating yet sad history. The chance to pause for refreshments contributed to the overall comfort of the tour. In summary, I highly recommend this experience.
This was a fantastic 3-hour tour led by an excellent driver and guide who shared insights about the country. We had a break for restroom stops, which included some fruit. A small bar offered drinks, and we found locally grown products in a charming little shop. John and Dave truly deserve high praise for this experience.
I had a wonderful time on the top deck of the bus, where it was quite windy. Our guide Hayley was incredibly knowledgeable and continuously shared insights about the areas we passed. The drive from Ayia Napa to Varosha took about an hour and a half, as we picked up other guests along the way. Once we arrived, we had almost two hours to explore, which was essential. There's a lot of walking involved, but you can rent bikes and scooters if you'd like. Facilities like restrooms are readily available, and a map is provided that details everything. A big thank you to our driver John for a memorable and informative day. The visit is definitely worthwhile.
Exploring Varosha with this tour was an excellent choice, providing great value for the hassle-free experience of visiting this legendary town without the stress of border crossings or car rental logistics. The Original Red Bus conveniently picks you up from a nearby location in Asia Napa/Protaras and collects your passports for the border crossing, checking them before you board. From the initial pickup to crossing the border can take about 1-2 hours, with the actual crossing time being no more than 15 minutes in either direction. You'll receive your passport back after returning across the border. Upon arrival in Varosha, you are dropped off at the town's entrance and given a designated return time. Inside, options for transportation include bike, e-scooter, or a buggy (with a driver provided). Be aware of the safety disclaimers; not all bikes had functioning brakes and the e-scooters have a time limit of two hours. Payment is cashless within Varosha, so using a card is necessary. You'll have 2.5 hours to explore Varosha. We rented bikes, which allowed us ample opportunity to see the sights, take photos, and enjoy the open roads. Even in October, the town was bustling, but the atmosphere felt more deserted the further we cycled. There are several modern restrooms and snack facilities throughout the town. The beach closest to the entrance features changing rooms and a cafe. Keep in mind that Varosha is still a militarized area with restrictions on photography and access to certain streets, monitored by police and soldiers. Paul and John from the Original Red Bus were welcoming from the start, creating a relaxed atmosphere with their friendly conversations while providing all necessary information. This well-organized trip was worth every penny, allowing us to fully enjoy our exploration without the hassle of vehicle rentals or navigating borders.
This was a lovely family outing, providing a great opportunity to learn about the local history while enjoying the unique experience of riding an English bus. The trip lasted approximately three hours and included a break for restroom access and cold drink purchases. Both the driver and guide were exceptionally friendly.
This tour was truly incredible. The guides, Clive and Paul, provided a wealth of information, making the experience both enjoyable and engaging. Varosha has a haunting beauty, and it's heartbreaking to see such a lovely place in its current state. The beach is breathtaking and it's easy to envision its former glory. As we returned, passing through the deserted Varosha town was quite poignant, with abandoned homes on one side and newer residences on the other. Clive and Paul facilitated a smooth border crossing, and we shared many laughs throughout the bus ride. I highly recommend this experience to everyone. Thank you.
I had a fantastic experience with the original red bus Varosha team. The staff was friendly and amusing, and our guide was excellent. It was a great day and worth the money.
Clive and Paul were fantastic guides, keeping us entertained and involved throughout the journey. Varosha offers a surreal experience, especially for those who remember the events of 1974; it truly feels like living history. I highly recommend this tour.
