• The most notable cave at Ellora is Cave 16, known as Kailasa Cave. Designed to mimic Mount Kailash, the dwelling place of Lord Shiva, Cave 16 stands as a free-standing temple complex and represents the largest single monolithic excavation globally. It was crafted under Krishna I (757–773) of the Rashtrakuta dynasty and is twice the scale of the Parthenon in Athens, employing 7,000 workers over a period of 150 years. • The Ellora Caves, also referred to as Verul Leni, exemplify some of the finest rock-cut architecture in India. Situated near the city of Aurangabad, these 34 caves were carved from the Charanandri hills. This UNESCO World Heritage site features a blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain caves, constructed between the 5th and 10th centuries. Located along an ancient trade route, Ellora Caves were never obscured like the Ajanta Caves and have continually attracted visitors. • Cave 10, known as Dashavatara, is another remarkable example of rock-cut sculpture. It includes an open courtyard with a free-standing monolithic mandapa at the center, along with a two-story excavated temple at the rear. A prominent relief within Dashavatara illustrates the death of Hiranyakashipu by Lord Narasimha, the Man-Lion avatar of Vishnu. • The travel time from Aurangabad to Ellora is approximately one hour each way.
