• A drive of 2.5 hours will take you to the Ajanta Caves. The Ajanta Caves were constructed in two distinct phases. The first phase dates back to the 2nd century BC when Hinayana Buddhism was predominant. The Buddha's presence is depicted through pillars, stupas, and footprints. The initial caves were carved from solid rock during the Sātavāhana Empire, which began around 230 BC. The majority of the caves feature themes from the Jataka Tales, which narrate the life of the Buddha prior to his enlightenment. Cave 1 showcases the two most renowned images at Ajanta, featuring the bodhisattvas Padmapani and Vajrapani flanking the entrance to the Buddha shrine. • The second phase of caves was established around 400 AD, following the principles of Mahayana Buddhism, which introduced a human depiction of the Buddha. Emperor Harishena of the Vakataka dynasty supported this later phase of construction. The architectural style evolved between the Hinayana and Mahayana eras, transitioning from rectangular "Vihara" halls for prayer and living with small square dormitory cells to a sanctuary featuring a large statue of the Buddha at the rear. The murals in most caves were created using tempera on a mud plaster base. Over 500 stories from the Jataka Tales are illustrated on the cave walls. A return drive of 2.5 hours will conclude with drop-off at your hotel in Aurangabad.
