Reviews
The scenery was breathtaking, and our host was not only friendly but also very knowledgeable. They captured some amazing photos for us as well. This tour is definitely a must-do.
The beauty of Geiranger and its surroundings is remarkable, and the tour with Myla was outstanding. She took us along routes not frequented by tour buses, allowing us to pause for photographs in more secluded areas. Myla's passion for the region truly enhanced our experience. We enjoyed lunch at a charming family-run restaurant, where we sampled local dishes that we wouldn't have discovered on our own. The tour concluded at a picturesque location where we could descend several steps beside a waterfall. There were plenty of landings for taking pictures without disrupting others, and she offered to drive us down if we preferred not to walk. This tour is absolutely essential for anyone visiting the area.
I returned to Longyearbyen for the winter season, eager to experience the 24-hour darkness, see the Northern Lights, visit the Arctic's sole brewery, and go dog sledding within my limited two half-days. Upon exiting the terminal, I was hit by a strong wind and frigid temperatures, but my winter attire served me well. It was dark by 2 PM, and I took the shuttle to Svalbard Hotell-Polfareren, where I previously enjoyed warm hospitality and a delightful breakfast. The hotel is conveniently located next to the Tourist Center, where I booked my dog sledding excursion with Basecamp Explorer and a brewery tour at Svalbard Bryggeri, complete with beer tastings. On the day of the sledding adventure, Basecamp Explorer collected me and six others, fitting us with warm gear and providing a safety briefing before taking us to the dog camp. There, we met the 70 sled dogs, learned to harness them, and how to handle the sled with its two brake systems. Each of us had the chance to drive the sled down the hill into the valley, creating an exhilarating experience enhanced by the sight of mountain outlines against the darkness. The dogs loved the ride, and we enjoyed the thrill of slowing them down with the brakes during our 10-kilometer journey. After returning, we were treated to meeting several excited puppies in their pen, which was a delightful chaos. We then returned our gear at the office and went back to the hotel, already longing for a repeat of this adventure in the future. For fans of beer and Longyearbyen's recent history, visiting Svalbard Bryggeri is a must. You learn about its establishment, the founder Robert Johansen's remarkable life story, and get to sample their beers. The evening tour is enjoyable. Longyearbyen has many shops and restaurants to explore, including Cafe Huskies and Fruene for local chocolates. The area's rich history is easily discoverable, making me want to revisit this winter paradise.
