Kharana Castle (Qasr al-Kharanah)
Amman, Jordan

Kharana Castle, or Qasr al-Kharanah, is a well-preserved desert castle dating back to the early Islamic era, likely constructed in the 8th century. Built of sandstone, its imposing rectangular structure features thick walls and unique arched windows, set against the stark backdrop of the surrounding desert landscape.
Visitors can explore its spacious halls and intricate stonework, providing insight into early Islamic architecture and history. The best time to visit is in the cooler months, ideally in the late afternoon when the sun casts warm hues across the stone. The castle lies about 60 kilometres east of Amman, making it a convenient stop on the way to the Desert Castles route.
