Ganga Sagar (Sagar Island)
Kolkata, India

Ganga Sagar, located on Sagar Island at the mouth of the Hooghly River, is an important pilgrimage site where the Ganges meets the Bay of Bengal. It features the sacred Kapil Muni Temple, dedicated to a sage believed to have attained salvation here, along with a long sandy beach that attracts thousands of pilgrims, especially during Makar Sankranti.
Visiting in January offers a lively atmosphere, as many flock for the rituals and the annual fair. The island is roughly 100 kilometres from Kolkata, and ferries from Kakdwip connect you to the scenic coastline. It's worth noting that the tides can affect ferry schedules, so plan accordingly.
